Gringo Hill: What It's Like to Stay There

Gringo Hill rises directly behind Sayulita's plaza, and it's where Casa G Sayulita calls home. If you're weighing a stay up here against a rental in the town center, here's what to actually expect.

Where the Name Comes From

The hill takes its name from the American and Canadian expats who first bought land here decades ago, when it was still affordable hillside property. Today it's a mix of luxurious modern villas and older, more rustic homes — including Rancho Manuel, a horseback riding operation that keeps the neighborhood feeling grounded rather than purely upscale.

The Views

Most of Sayulita's other neighborhoods face the ocean directly. Gringo Hill's views run the other way — sweeping mountain and jungle valley vistas, with the ocean visible in the distance from higher points. It's a different, quieter kind of view than a beachfront balcony, and it comes with colorful houses, mature tropical plantings, and a mix of cobblestone and dirt roads.

Getting Up and Down

Multiple streets and public staircases connect Gringo Hill to the plaza below, and the walk down into town takes 10–15 minutes depending on where you're staying. The walk back up is a genuine hill climb, more noticeable the higher up you are — which is why a golf cart rental is worth it for most stays, especially in the heat of the day. It's a real tradeoff: quieter, more private, and more spacious than downtown, but not quite as walkable.

Who It Suits

Gringo Hill works best for travelers who want a private pool, more square footage, and a break from the noise of the plaza at night, while still being close enough to walk into town for dinner. If your priority is stepping straight out your door onto the beach, a downtown or beachfront rental will serve you better. If you want space, privacy, and a view, this is Sayulita's best hillside neighborhood for it.
