Surfing in Sayulita: Beginner's Guide

Sayulita is one of Mexico's best towns to learn to surf. The main beach breaks over a sandy bottom in shallow, forgiving water, surf schools line the sand, and board rentals are everywhere — no wetsuit required, since the water stays warm year-round.

The Breaks

Sayulita has three main breaks, each suited to a different level:

• Beach Break (in front of the fishing boats): The beginner zone. Sandy bottom, slower waves, and shallow enough that you can often touch the bottom. Every surf school in town operates here.
• Right Point Break (near the river mouth): Best for intermediate and advanced surfers, especially on bigger north swells. It gets crowded and powerful — not the spot to learn.
• Left Point Break (north beach side): Another intermediate/advanced break, less crowded than the right, working best on bigger swells.

Best Season for Beginners

May through October — Sayulita's rainy season — brings smaller, gentler waves and far fewer crowds, making it the easiest window to learn. November through April brings more powerful north swells that experienced surfers chase, but which can be intimidating if you're just starting out.

Lessons & Rentals

Group lessons typically run $40–$60 USD and include a board and rash guard; private lessons cost more but get you standing up faster. If you're staying a while, renting by the day or week works out cheaper than paying by the hour.

Tips for Your First Sessions

• Watch the lineup before paddling out, and follow proper wave-sharing etiquette — no dropping in or snaking other surfers.
• Stick to the beach break and sit out the main point break until you've got some experience.
• Go early in the morning for cleaner conditions and a quieter lineup.
• Wear a rash guard — it protects against both sun and board rash.
• Mid-tide generally produces the best-shaped waves for learning.
